BPE 2 management flowchart

- Confirm the periodontal diagnosis before treatment begins, record it in the notes and inform the patient.
- If there is obvious evidence of interdental recession, this suggests the patient has periodontitis so consider a full periodontal assessment.
- For all patients with a diagnosis of Periodontitis, annual periodontal charting should be recorded, not only BPE
- Note that if the patient has a diagnosis of periodontitis, their treatment needs may differ and should be based on the periodontal diagnosis rather than the BPE score
1. Are risk factors for disease progression present?
If yes:
Provide Step 1 of treatment:

- Discuss and arrange risk factor management and support to control disease/risk for disease, including OHI
- Provide PMPR and removal of plaque retentive features as part of Step of treatment.
- Go to Maintenance and recall.
If no:
Provide Step 1 of treatment:
-
- Provide OHI and PMPR and removal of plaque retentive features as part of Step 1 of treatment
- Go to Maintenance and recall.
2. Maintenance and recall

- Arrange appropriate maintenance care and risk-based recall.
- Record periodontal charting annually for all patients with a diagnosis of periodontitis (i.e. not only BPE).
